1. Introduce yourself.
Hi everyone, I’m Nicola Armento, 32 years old, from a small town just outside Milan, Italy.
2. What made you get into film?
I started shooting film to take things slower. With digital I can afford to mess up, but with only 36 frames, I really think before pressing the shutter. That’s one of the main reasons I switched from digital to film. The sensations film gives me are unbeatable the colors, the grain, and the wait before I get my shots back from the lab are a key part of everything I do.
3. What has been your most challenging photo to take?
I don’t really have one specific shot that felt hard to take. There were times I had to hustle a bit to get the photo I had in mind, but that never made it frustrating if anything, it made it more exciting. That’s what makes me feel alive.
4. What’s something about film that still surprises you?
Film never stops surprising me. Just when I think I’ve figured it out even after years of shooting it still surprises me with every roll. I love trying new stocks and seeing what I get through experimenting. At the same time, I keep going back to my go-to films and watching how they react to different light, overexposure, underexposure, and everything in between.
5. What keeps you coming back when you don’t feel inspired?
When I don’t feel inspired, I never force myself to shoot. I don’t try to push it. It happens pretty often, so I just take all the time I need to reset and get my thoughts back in order. I spend time with my family and start planning my next trip that’s what gives me the energy to keep doing what I do.
