Introduce yourself and say where you’re from.

I’m Alex Burke, a large format photographer from Denver, Colorado.

What’s a photo you almost didn’t take but are glad you did?

Due to the slow nature of a 4x5 camera, I’m more likely to miss an image because I couldn’t get ready in time for the light. As for images that I almost didn’t take, I would say there was one after coming down from a night in a hut in New Zealand. I only had one sheet of film left, but there was a nice splash of sunlight on the rocky foreground with Mount Cook towering in the distance in golden hour light. I considered saving the sheet for something else, but the shot ended up being one of my favorites from the trip.

What place has been your favorite to photograph?

I’m a sucker for the Great Plains, as seen in these images, especially the far northern prairie of Montana. However, my three-month road trip to Alaska was likely my favorite and hard to top.

What keeps you coming back to film?

I’ve never left it! My workflow is so dialed in for sheet film that it’s hard to imagine anything else.

What do you hope people feel or take away when they view your photography?

An appreciation of open space, big skies, and thoughtful compositions.
