I’m Philip, 33 year old film photographer from Germany. I started shooting film about 2 years ago and feel most comfortable in the mountains, at the coast or anywhere as long as I‘m exploring a place with my camera.
What role does nostalgia play in your approach to film photography?
“Part of why I love film photography is my affection towards nostalgia. The characteristics which make a film shot individual such as grain, color shifts, light leaks, soft contrasts are often associated with memories of our childhood and ‘simpler’ times.
They tend to create a sense of warmth and authenticity which make it (at least for me) easier to evoke feelings through an image. To me film photography is more than shooting a photo. It is my attempt to capture a feeling, a precious memory that I like to look back on even years later.”
Have you ever had a happy accident with film that turned into one of your favorite shots?
“I love those first of the roll shots which got unpredictable film burns on them. Last year I shot a roll which has been previously opened a bit by the pre owner and was exposed to the sunlight. I did not know what to expect but the result blew me away as it turned to a perfectly realistic looking flame on the edge of the film roll. See the photo in my selection.”
Is there a particular era of photography that influences your style the most?
“I can’t name a specific era which influences me the most. But what does influence me the most is all the film photographers in this community inspiring each other day by day. I really enjoy being a part of it and that way I am able to draw a lot of inspiration from it.”
What has been your favorite place you have visited for photography?
“The never ending golden light of California left me missing the westcoast a lot after a recent trip. It felt like an endless photographer’s playground and I can not recommend enough driving along the coast and just let yourself inspire by all the beaches, people villages, cities and sunsets under the Californian sky.”
